A washer is a mechanical part used with a screw fastener, like a bolt and nut, to prevent the screw from releasing the load from the nut or bolt head over a larger region. Different kinds of washers are employed to keep things from falling undone. To keep the nut about the connecting bolt or stud, tab washers, a type of lock washer, have one or more notches or tabs on the inside or outside. To create a secure locking surface, the tabs can be bent or engaged into keyways or slots in the attached exterior.
