A coolant temperature sender is an on-engine protection device that monitors the engine's coolant temperature. It screws into the engine block and can produce different numbers dependent on coolant temp.
A coolant temperature sensor, also known as an engine coolant temperature sensor, measures the temperature of the coolant/antifreeze mix in the cooling system. It indicates how much heat the engine emits. It would be challenging to determine engine overheating without a functional sensor.
