Almost as soon as the wheel was invented in antiquity, thrust washers became necessary. Sturdy flat washer bearings keep wheels from detaching from axles when the bearing that carries the radial load, such as a bushing or roller bearing, cannot handle axial or thrust loads. The application determines the type of thrust washer. Temperature, load, and speed are variables that influence material selection. Plastic, brass, bronze, stainless steel, graphite, and other materials can make thrust washers. Thrust washers are low- and high-carbon steel. Case hardening or thorough hardening are the two processes available for carbon steel.
