The purpose of thrust washers is to make sure you have enough space between the gearcase and the prop hub. They ensure that the prop and driveshaft splines have enough room to connect. The thrust gives a hard surface for the splined sleeve so the proper torque can be applied to the prop nut and keeps the prop centered on the shaft.
