Cotter pins, also known as split pins or cotter keys, are rounded-headed bent pins that slide into holes. Once placed into the hole, the two ends bend in opposite directions, deforming the pin and making it difficult to remove. While cotter pins exist in some shapes and sizes, the split pin is the most frequent. Cotter pins are used with castle nuts to secure them to a bolt and prevent them from accidentally spinning loose. They are usually composed of pliable metal and can be bent with pliers or by hand to make them tough to remove. Each high-quality pin is zinc-plated stainless steel that will last a long time and eliminate the need for replacements in your fastening activities.
