The gearcase transforms the driveshaft's vertical rotational power into horizontal rotational energy that travels along the prop shaft and propeller. The gearcase keeps the direction of rotation of the prop shaft and propeller by the gearbox. If one part of the lower unit is not working correctly or fails, you could become stranded in the water.
