Gearcase Complete (REC422-B25F) by Recmar The marine gearbox, also known as the gearbox of a ship or offshore vessel, connects the engine to the propeller shaft. Its purpose is to lower the engine's rotational speed (rpm) to the appropriate operating speed range for the ship or offshore vessel. The driveshaft in the upper is connected to your engine via the transom and transfers power to a gearbox. In the case of boats, a gearbox controls the power or propulsion. A gearbox's function is to increase or decrease speed. As a result, torque output will be the inverse function of speed. The torque output will increase if the enclosed drive is a speed reducer (speed output less than speed input); if the drive increases, the torque output will decrease.
