An engine features a valve cover that protects the top-mounted valve train parts. The valve cover gasket is often constructed of rubber in modern automobiles. The gasket shrinks and brittleness under increasing temperatures and over time, which could lead to oil leaks. How frequently should a valve cover gasket be replaced? A valve cover gasket doesn't require any maintenance. Only if it leaks does it need to be replaced. When performing a significant engine repair, the valve cover gasket may also need to be replaced if it is old. Oil stains beneath the engine, a burnt oil odor under the hood, and visible oil trails coming down the engine are signs of a leaky valve cover gasket.
