Depth sounders (also known as echo sounders) are a form of SONAR system used in marine navigation to detect water depth or identify and visualize items beneath the waves. Depth sounders transmit a pulse into the water and measure the rate at which the sound will get back from any solid object that tries to pass through between the transducer and the ocean floor. It is not only for catching fish, but it also provides highly valuable information such as water temperature, water depth, bottom topography, presence of fish, baitfish, including weeds, rocks, laydown, and shelves.
