The depth sounder transmits the signal from the transducer in the through-hull fitting to the ocean floor. The transducer counts how long it takes the signal to travel there and back, performs some fancy math, and outputs the result. Faria Digital Depth Sounder, Chesapeake SS White w/In-Hull Transducer has a large back-lit display that reads in any weather. When a shallow or deep water condition exists, an audible and visual alarm alerts the boater via programmable keel offset, which you can change at the display.
