Gas is compressed inside a cylinder to create energy for gas-charged lift supports. Closed doors store the former. Energy is released to raise and hold open a hatch, hood, liftgate, or trunk when it is opened. Gas-charged lift supports, often known as shock absorbers or struts, absorb energy to control motion. Since they include a 1,500 psi gas charge, lift supports are frequently unable to be manually compressed.
