A raw water pump with a flexible impeller is standard on most marine engines. It pumps the water from the outside of the boat into the engine's raw water cooling pipework. When inserting an impeller, be sure to put a durable waterproof grease or other lubricants suitable for the purpose and approved by the pump manufacturer on the shaft, so the impellor is less likely to become seized to the shaft over time and is easier to remove when the time comes. If your impeller fails, the pump will be unable to provide cool water to the engine, causing it to overheat.
